Our Sustainability Journey
Care for our Community
Sheng Siong strongly believes that we should always give back to the society with gratitude. Every year, we make an effort to provide financial assistance as well as sponsorships in-kind, lending our hands to those who are less fortunate. The spirit of giving has been well embraced by the Group as care for the community, for our customers, and for employees.
We believe that charitable contributions should go beyond the monetary form. Therefore, when it comes to giving back to the community, Sheng Siong’s focus has consistently been a contribution of resources such as space, time, effort and labour.
The supermarket is a space where the community congregates and we believe that we have an important role to play in promoting the community spirit, racial harmony, and neighbourliness, as well as supporting conversations on what matters to our community and environment.
Since 2012, we have collaborated with the Red Cross Youth annually in collecting hampers of food, toiletries and household items for the needy. We assisted in preparing the hampers for distribution to beneficiaries from skipped-generation families, single-parent households and low-income households each year.
Sheng Siong Queen Bee Programme
Sheng Siong collaborated with SkillsFuture Singapore in 2020 to drive the Sheng Siong Queen Bee programme. We are also the first Queen Bee partner to be appointed for the retail sector. As a Queen Bee, Sheng Siong has been championing the development of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and suppliers, equipping them with the necessary skills to scale up their digital capabilities. In August 2022, we hosted a closed-door visit for Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat to share on this programme.
Since 2017, we partnered with Heartwarmers Volunteer Group for a ground-up initiative called “Project 100=50”, through a collaboration with multiple parties including Henderson-Dawson CCC, Nee Soon Central Grassroots Organisations and Sree Narayana Mission Home, and has since expanded to include Tampines North CCC, Kembangan-Chai Chee Social Team and Jurong Spring CCC. Project 100=50 allows selected beneficiaries to purchase items at a 50% discount, up to a maximum discount of $50. These invited beneficiaries typically belong to lower middle-income families who require some form of financial help. The programme had helped these beneficiaries save money when buying groceries through discounted prices.
Sheng Siong had supported these events by setting up booths, providing shopping trolleys, baskets, fridges and shopping bags. Our colleagues from the House Brand Department have also volunteered their services, contributing many volunteer hours at these events.
Since 2014, we have collaborated with the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDs) through their enclave work model. We host 10 MINDs beneficiaries to work at our vegetable packing department. They work alongside our staff, dine with us for lunch at our canteen, and are invited to our company’s annual family day event to socialise with our employees.
Support Local Farms
Yili Vegetation & Trading Pte Ltd is one of Singapore’s leading local vegetable farms. Established in 1996 by owner Alan Toh, this family-run business is transitioning to its second generation, led by Alan’s daughter, Toh Ying Ying, and son, Toh Zheng Jie. Their mission is to provide Singapore with the freshest and highest-quality vegetables, contributing to building a healthier society. Committed to their vision, Yili remains dedicated to sustainable farming practices.
Green Harvest, a local farm in Singapore, boasts the title of Southeast Asia’s largest hydroponics glass greenhouse, spanning an impressive 150,000 square feet. With a rich farming heritage spanning four generations, Dave Huang joined the family business in 2009 after earning his Bachelor’s in Marketing and Management. Inspired by his great-grandfather, grandfather, father, and uncles who dedicated their lives to farming, Dave is committed to elevating the farm with cutting-edge technologies and actively explores new avenues to market the farm and its produce.
ComCrop is Singapore’s Urban Farming pioneer, cultivating leafy greens and herbs hydroponically, completely devoid of harmful pesticides, herbicides, or chemicals. This innovative approach occurs locally on a rooftop, harnessing fresh water and abundant sunlight. ComCrop’s daily harvest, featuring roots-on produce, ensures not only the freshest flavours but also an extended shelf life. Recognised for its commitment to cleanliness and sustainability, ComCrop is the first and only greenhouse-based farm officially certified with the “SG Clean & Green 3-Star” badge by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).
By carrying vegetables from Yili, Green Harvest and ComCrop in our stores, we hope to help them build a brand of safe, quality, and affordable locally-produced vegetables and improve demand among our customers.
Support for World No Tobacco Day
World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed globally on 31 May every year to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and to encourage people to quit smoking. Sheng Siong has been actively supporting this initiative by voluntarily halting the sale of tobacco products in all its stores on this day since 2015.
